Production Manager

The key crew member responsible for overseeing the physical production logistics — managing budgets, schedules, crew hiring, and ensuring the production runs smoothly from prep through wrap.

What Is a Production Manager?

A Production Manager (PM, sometimes called Unit Production Manager or UPM) is responsible for the physical logistics of a film production. They bridge the gap between the creative vision and the practical reality of making it happen. While the director focuses on performance and story, and the producer focuses on financing and distribution, the production manager focuses on getting the right people, equipment, and resources to the right place at the right time.

The PM oversees the day-to-day operations: hiring crew, managing the production budget, coordinating with department heads, arranging locations and permits, securing equipment, handling payroll, and resolving the inevitable logistical problems that arise during a shoot.

The Production Manager's Responsibilities

In pre-production, the PM works with the line producer to build a detailed budget and production schedule. They hire crew, negotiate deals with vendors, arrange insurance, and ensure all permits and contracts are in order before cameras roll.

During production, the PM monitors spending against the budget, manages any schedule changes, handles crew logistics (travel, accommodation, meals), and serves as the central point of coordination between all departments. When a location falls through or weather forces a schedule change, the PM is the one who makes it work.

In post-production, the PM oversees remaining financial obligations, handles final vendor payments, and closes out the production paperwork.

Production Management in Indian Cinema

In Indian film industries, the production manager role often overlaps with the executive producer or production controller. The responsibilities are the same — budget management, logistics, crew coordination — but the title and reporting structure vary by industry and production size. On smaller productions, one person may handle both AD and PM duties.

Digital Tools for Production Management

CutPrint gives production managers a unified platform to manage the documents and schedules that define their daily work. Auto-generated breakdowns feed into the stripboard schedule, which generates call sheets automatically. Every change propagates through the system, so the PM always has the current state of the production — on their phone, even on remote locations with limited connectivity.
